Kenya does not publish audited net-worth statements of its governors. Wealth declarations filed with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission remain confidential. As a result, there is no official ranking of governors by verified personal wealth.

The figures below are compiled from public statements and media reports. They should be treated as estimates, not confirmed facts. Rankings can and do differ between publications.

Important Disclaimer

This list covers only currently serving governors in 2026. Former governors are excluded. No figure on this page has been independently audited by the EACC or any official body. Readers should treat every number with caution.

How We Compiled This List

We reviewed self-declarations, media wealth compilations from 2024–2026, and known business or inheritance backgrounds. Where a governor has made a public statement, that is given the highest weight. All other figures are labelled as media estimates.

Individual Governor Profiles

1. Wavinya Ndeti – Machakos
In a September 2024 Facebook reply to a follower who asked her net worth, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti wrote: “I am not a poor girl and I thank God. More than 5b in Totality.” That remains the clearest public self-declaration by any sitting governor. Her wealth is linked to family holdings, large-scale farming and real estate. No detailed asset breakdown has been published.

2. Susan Kihika – Nakuru
Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika comes from a prominent political family. Her late father, Dickson Kihika Kimani, left a substantial estate that has been the subject of court proceedings. Media estimates of her personal wealth commonly range between KSh 3 billion and KSh 4 billion, combining inheritance, real estate and legal practice. These figures have never been independently verified.

3. Anne Waiguru – Kirinyaga
Anne Waiguru previously served as Devolution Cabinet Secretary and has a long technocrat career that includes senior roles at the World Bank and Citigroup. Older media reports and her own past statements placed her net worth in the low billions. More recent public comments by her have been more modest. The KSh 3.2 billion figure circulating in some 2025–2026 lists remains a media estimate only.

4. Kimani Wamatangi – Kiambu
Before entering politics, Kimani Wamatangi built businesses in transport, logistics and building automation. Media estimates of his wealth typically fall in the KSh 2–3 billion range. No audited public declaration exists.

5. Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o – Kisumu
A long-serving academic and politician, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has accumulated wealth through teaching, international consultancies and property in Kisumu and Nairobi. Media put the figure at around KSh 2 billion. This remains an estimate.

6. Mutula Kilonzo Jr. – Makueni
The son of the late Senior Counsel Mutula Kilonzo, the Makueni governor inherited a law firm and agricultural land. Media estimates place his wealth between KSh 700 million and KSh 1 billion. Inheritance forms the bulk of the reported figure.

7. Ken Lusaka – Bungoma
Ken Lusaka has spent decades in public administration, including as District Commissioner, Permanent Secretary and Senate Speaker. Media estimates of his net worth sit in the KSh 500–700 million range.

8. Simba Arati – Kisii
Simba Arati’s reported wealth is linked to real estate in Nairobi and agricultural investments in Nyanza. Media place the figure at KSh 400–500 million. No official verification exists.

9. Fernandes Barasa – Kakamega
Before becoming governor, Fernandes Barasa served as Managing Director and CEO of the state-owned Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). Media estimates put his wealth at KSh 400–500 million.

10. Johnson Sakaja – Nairobi
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has interests in business consultancies, media and real estate. Media estimates commonly range from KSh 350 million to KSh 450 million. These figures are unverified.

How Reliable Are These Figures?

Only one entry on this list (Wavinya Ndeti) rests on a direct public statement by the governor herself. Every other number is a media estimate that can vary widely between publications. Kenya has no legal requirement for governors to publish detailed, audited personal balance sheets. Wealth declarations exist but are not open to the public. Readers should therefore treat this ranking as an informed compilation of available reports rather than a definitive league table.

Why Governor Wealth Rankings Differ

Different publications produce different orders and numbers because they:

  • Value property and businesses differently
  • Include or exclude family or inherited assets
  • Use older declarations or outdated exchange rates
  • Estimate private-company holdings without access to financial statements
  • Rely on anonymous sources or social-media claims

That is why one site may place a governor higher or lower than another. The absence of a single official data source makes perfect consistency impossible.

What Counts as Net Worth?

Net worth is simply assets minus liabilities. Assets can include land, buildings, shares, businesses, farms, vehicles and cash. Liabilities include loans, mortgages and other debts. Family wealth or a spouse’s assets are not automatically part of an individual’s personal net worth. Many media estimates blur these lines, which is another reason the figures should be read carefully.

Where the Wealth Comes From

A clear pattern emerges. Most of the wealth on this list was built before the governors took office:

  • Inheritance (Susan Kihika, Mutula Kilonzo Jr.)
  • Private business (Kimani Wamatangi, Fernandes Barasa)
  • Long public-service or technocrat careers (Anne Waiguru, Ken Lusaka, Anyang’ Nyong’o)

The official governor’s salary of roughly KSh 990,000 gross per month cannot, by itself, explain the higher estimates.
