📋 About Tenwek Hospital

Tenwek Hospital’s history dates back to 1935, when the colonial Kenyan government granted 10 acres of land to the World Gospel Mission, where missionary Catherine Smith began treating illnesses and delivering babies. The hospital as it is known today was established through the 1950s, receiving its first physician, Dr. Ernest Steury, in 1959. Today Tenwek is the Medical Ministry of the Africa Gospel Church (AGC) in collaboration with the World Gospel Mission, and operates as a 400-bed, KEPH Level 5 Teaching and Referral Mission Hospital serving the vast South West region of Kenya, principally the Kipsigis and Maasai communities, and the country at large.

Tenwek is renowned for comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care across paediatrics, internal medicine, general and orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry, and emergency medicine, with an especially active obstetrics and gynaecology department performing around 3,000 deliveries a year. In October 2024, Tenwek opened a new multi-story Cardiothoracic Center (CTC) — the largest dedicated cardiothoracic surgical unit in sub-Saharan Africa, with capacity to handle 2,000 heart cases annually. The hospital also trains Kenyan doctors, nurses, clinical officers, and chaplains through the Tenwek Hospital College of Health Sciences and School of Chaplaincy, and runs three satellite health facilities — Tenwek Hospital Annex in Bomet town, Kaboson Health Centre in Chepalungu, and Ngiito Dispensary in South West Narok.

Kiplagat Rono
Cardiac Patient, Bomet · April 2026
★★★★★

“I had heart surgery at the new Cardiothoracic Center and could not believe I received this level of care right here in Bomet without travelling abroad. The surgical team and nurses were exceptional and prayed with us before the procedure. God bless Tenwek.”

J
Jane Chepkoech
Maternity Patient, Sotik · February 2026
★★★★★

“I delivered both my children at Tenwek’s maternity ward. The care was professional and compassionate both times, and the cost was fair compared to hospitals in Nairobi. Truly grateful for what this hospital does for our community.”

Ann Nyaboke
Outpatient, Kaboson Health Centre · December 2025
★★★★☆

“Kaboson Health Centre is very useful for us in Chepalungu, saving a long trip to the main hospital for routine care. It’s still being built back up to its original bed capacity, so more serious cases get referred to Tenwek main. Staff are kind and attentive.”

Dr. Emily Sang
Surgical Resident, Tenwek · September 2025
★★★★★

“Training as an OB/GYN resident at Tenwek has given me unmatched surgical exposure. The consultants, both Kenyan and international, are deeply invested in mentoring the next generation. This hospital’s teaching mission is genuinely making a difference across the region.”
