The company’s first store opened in September 2014 along Ronald Ngala Street in Nairobi’s central business district, employing over 100 staff and operating from a building owned by Maina himself, who also holds other property investments in the area. The company’s head office is located along Thika Road at Highpoint, Juja, in Kiambu County, roughly 33 kilometres northeast of Nairobi.
Since its founding, Mathai has grown to become the number one retail supermarket chain in Central Kenya, with outlets spanning Central Kenya, Nairobi, Embu, Nyeri, and Murang’a.
