Key takeaway: The Absa Shilling Money Market Fund is a CMA-regulated unit trust from Absa Asset Management. It pools money into short-term interest instruments. In mid-to-late September 2026 industry trackers it sat near 7.3%–7.5% gross effective annual yield (about 6.2%–6.4% after 15% withholding tax). Minimum entry is KSh 1,000. Rates change. Always confirm the live figure with Absa before you invest.

Absa’s money market products sit in the middle of the Kenyan pack for yield, not at the top. What they offer is a bank-linked brand, a low entry point and a clear low-risk mandate. This guide covers what the funds are, how rates are quoted, fees, how to open and fund an account, and what to watch before you put money in.

What the Absa Money Market Funds Are
Absa Asset Management Limited runs unit trusts authorised by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). The main retail product people mean by “Absa MMF” is the Absa Shilling Money Market Fund.
The fund’s job is to earn interest income from Kenya shilling short-term instruments such as Treasury bills, deposits, commercial paper and similar debt paper, while keeping risk low and access reasonably open.
There is also an Absa Dollar Money Market Fund for investors who want USD-denominated short-term income rather than shilling exposure.
According to Absa’s June 2026 Shilling MMF fact sheet, the fund started in February 2022. Fund size was about KSh 25.78 billion at that sheet date. The benchmark cited is the 91-day Treasury bill.
Absa’s product page describes the Shilling fund as suitable for short-term money, including periods when equities feel noisy. That does not mean the fund cannot lose value under stress. It means the mandate is low-risk money-market assets, not equities.
Current Interest Rates and Yields (2026)
Absa does not lock one permanent rate into the law. Yields move with Treasury bill rates, bank deposits and the fund’s portfolio.
Shilling fund (recent independent trackers):
- Around 7.3% gross effective annual yield, about 6.21% net after 15% withholding tax, in a 7 September 2026 industry table (PesaCalc / Serrari-linked ranking).
- Around 7.5% gross in an 18 September 2026 Business Daily–based table (MMFs Kenya).
Those are tracker snapshots, not Absa’s private guarantee. Gross yields are usually shown after management costs are already in the unit price, and before the 15% withholding tax on interest. Net is a simple 15% cut of the interest for most resident individuals.
Illustrative only: on KSh 100,000 at 7.3% gross for a full year, interest would be about KSh 7,300 before tax and about KSh 6,205 after 15% WHT, if the rate held for the whole year. Rates do not hold flat for a year in practice.
Dollar fund: independent H1 2026 reviews put Absa’s dollar MMF near the lower end of the USD table, with average returns around 4.1% gross (about 3.5% net) over that half-year. June 2026 wraps put it lower still. Treat those as historical averages, not today’s live quote.
Interest on Absa’s unit trusts is generally determined daily and credited monthly into the investment, which supports compounding if you leave the money in.
Always ask Absa Asset Management or check the latest fact sheet / daily published yield before you commit cash.
Fees and Costs
From Absa’s Kenya asset-management product pages:
- Initial fee: 0% on both Shilling and Dollar MMFs
- Annual management fee: 2% p.a. (Shilling), 1% p.a. (Dollar)
The June 2026 Shilling fact sheet lists a total expense ratio of 2.85%. That TER is broader than the headline management fee. It covers fund-level costs such as management, trustee and custody expenses as packaged in the sheet.
The Dollar fund Key Information Document cites an average expense ratio of about 1.15%, with no entry, exit or transaction fees stated in that document.
The information memorandum caps management fees at not more than 3% p.a. before VAT on assets under management. What you actually pay is the rate Absa is applying now, already reflected in the daily unit price and published yield.
There is no separate exit fee in the standard Absa unit-trust marketing for these funds. Redemption timing still follows Absa’s processing rules.
Minimums, Liquidity and Tax
- Start: KSh 1,000 for the Shilling fund (fact sheet and Absa site).
- Top-ups: June 2026 fact sheet states no minimum top-up amount. Older information-memorandum text cited KSh 1,000 minimum top-up and withdrawal. Confirm the live rule when you open the account.
- Lock-in: No fixed lock-in period in the product materials reviewed. Liquidity is described as moderate. Plan for a few business days, not same-day M-Pesa convenience like some app-only products.
- Tax: Interest is subject to 15% withholding tax in Kenya for typical resident investors. That tax is usually treated as final on the interest portion.
Absa’s older FAQ pack listed M-Pesa Paybill 4106929, with the account number as your ID number or portfolio code once the account exists. Confirm the paybill and account format with Absa before sending money.
How to Invest in Absa MMF in 2026
1. Branch or wealth desk
Walk into any Absa Bank Kenya branch and ask for Absa Asset Management / unit trusts. Bring your national ID or passport, KRA PIN, a passport photo and bank details or statement as required. Corporates need board resolutions, registration papers and signatory mandates.
2. Online / forms
Absa points investors to its asset-management pages and contact forms on absabank.co.ke. Complete the unit-trust application, attach KYC documents and follow the funding instructions Absa sends (transfer, M-Pesa or branch cash/cheque processes as allowed).
3. Existing Absa banking channels
If you already bank with Absa, ask whether your mobile or internet banking can open or fund the unit trust directly. Rules change by product build. Do not assume every Absa app menu equals a live MMF subscription.
4. Absa Next
Absa launched Absa Next in September 2026 as a digital savings and loans app that does not require an existing Absa account. Launch coverage said investment products such as unit trusts and money market funds were coming soon, not that MMF was already the core live feature. Savings in the app were marketed separately (up to about 7% in Absa’s launch messaging). Do not treat Absa Next as a confirmed full MMF onboarding path until Absa shows the live unit-trust product in the app and you verify the fund name, fact sheet and CMA disclosure inside the flow.
After account opening
- Receive your portfolio or client number.
- Fund with at least KSh 1,000 (Shilling fund) via the channels Absa confirms.
- Keep the welcome email, fact sheet and monthly statements.
- Check units and yield on Absa’s published prices or statements.
Contact numbers listed on Absa’s June 2026 fact sheet include +254 722 130 120, +254 732 130 120 and 020 390 0000, with email AssetManagementKE@absa.africa. Older FAQ packs also list AbsakenyaAssetmanagementCustomerService@absa.africa and 0711 097 000. Use the contacts on the current Absa site if anything differs.
What the Fund Holds and Who It Suits
Absa’s MMF materials say the portfolio focuses on short-term fixed income: Treasury bills and bonds, term deposits, commercial paper and related instruments. That is classic money-market construction.
Often a fit if you want:
- an emergency float that can earn more than a plain transactional account
- a parking place for school fees, rent or project money for months, not decades
- a bank-group brand with a CMA-regulated unit trust structure
Often a poor fit if you want:
- the highest headline MMF yield in Kenya this week (Absa has recently sat well below the top of the league tables)
- same-day full liquidity every time
- long-term equity growth or hard-currency speculation beyond what the dollar fund actually delivers
Higher-yielding MMFs exist. Higher yield is not the same as higher safety or faster withdrawals. Compare custodian, trustee, fund size, redemption experience and disclosure quality, not only the percentage.
Risks and Points to Watch
- Yields fall when short-term market rates fall. 2024–2025 style double-digit MMF rates are not a permanent feature of 2026.
- Unit trusts are not KDIC-insured bank deposits. Capital-preservation is the objective, not a statutory bank guarantee.
- Credit risk still exists in corporate paper and bank placements, even when the fund is labelled low risk.
- Wrong KYC or incomplete documents delay account opening and withdrawals.
- Chama and company accounts need extra resolutions and signatories. Do not open a group fund in one person’s name by accident.
Read the information memorandum and latest fact sheet. Past performance is not a promise of future returns.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current Absa Money Market Fund rate in Kenya?
It changes. Mid-to-late September 2026 trackers put the Absa Shilling MMF near 7.3%–7.5% gross effective annual yield (about 6.2%–6.4% after 15% WHT). Confirm with Absa Asset Management or a current fact sheet.
What is the minimum investment for Absa MMF?
KSh 1,000 for the Shilling fund. Dollar fund minimum is commonly listed from USD 100 in Absa’s MMF FAQ materials.
Is Absa MMF safe?
It is a low-risk, CMA-regulated unit trust investing in short-term interest instruments, with a separate custodian and trustee structure. It is not the same as a bank deposit under deposit insurance. You can still face credit and market risks inside the portfolio.
How is interest calculated?
Absa’s unit-trust documents describe interest income determined daily and credited to the investment monthly, supporting compounding if you reinvest.
How do I withdraw money from Absa MMF?
Request a redemption through Absa Asset Management’s process (branch, advised email or digital channel once enabled). Expect processing over business days rather than instant cash. Confirm the current cut-off times with Absa.
Can I invest without an Absa bank account?
Absa’s digital Absa Next app was launched without requiring an Absa account for savings and loans, but unit trusts and MMFs were described as coming soon at launch. Traditional MMF onboarding still runs through Absa Asset Management applications, branches and documented funding routes. Ask Absa which path is live for your case.
What tax do I pay on Absa MMF interest?
Resident individuals typically face 15% withholding tax on the interest, often treated as a final tax. Confirm with a tax adviser if you are a non-resident or a corporate.
How does Absa compare with other MMFs?
In September 2026 trackers, Absa Shilling sat in the lower half of the table while leaders quoted about 11% gross. Absa’s selling points are brand, scale and process, not the top yield.
Bottom Line
The Absa Shilling Money Market Fund is a straightforward CMA-regulated parking product with a KSh 1,000 start, 0% entry fee and a published 2% management fee (TER higher on the June 2026 sheet). Recent industry tables put its gross yield around 7.3%–7.5%, roughly 6.2% after tax, which is competitive with banks but not with the highest-yielding MMFs. Open through Absa Asset Management channels, fund carefully, read the fact sheet, and treat every rate as live data, not a permanent offer.
For dollar savings, the Absa Dollar MMF is the sister product, with lower USD yields and its own fee sheet.
