📋 About Magunas Supermarket

Magunas Supermarket, trading under Maguna Andu Wholesalers, is owned by Kenyan businessman Simon Wachira, whose journey began as a hawker at Mukuyu Market in Murang’a County in the 1980s. He opened his first retail shop in Mukuyu Township in 1990 before growing the business into Maguna Andu Wholesalers, a major distributor for brands including Pwani Oil, Kenafric, Weetabix, and Kevian in the Mt Kenya region. Wachira, widely known locally as a philanthropist, has built the “Maguna Andu” name  loosely translating to “beneficial to the people”  into a household name across Central Kenya.

Today Magunas operates over 24 branches across five counties, with a strong regional presence in the Mt Kenya counties (Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Meru, Nyeri) as well as Nairobi and Mombasa, competing directly with larger chains like Naivas, Carrefour, and Quickmart on affordability and accessibility. Beyond the supermarket chain, Wachira also owns Nokras Riverine Hotel and Kilele Mall in Kenol, both in Murang’a County. On 7th July 2025, during the nationwide Saba Saba Day protests, the Magunas branch in Makutano, Meru County was looted and burned down by rioters who overwhelmed anti-riot police in the area  an incident widely covered by Kenyan media and condemned by the Meru County Governor. Three suspects were later arrested by the DCI in connection with the arson and looting. Renovation of the Meru branch, reported to cost over KSh 25 million, began within weeks of the incident, with the business aiming to reopen and restore the roughly 300 jobs the branch supported.

“Prices at Magunas are consistently lower than the bigger chains and the variety of goods is good for a locally-owned supermarket. Proud to shop somewhere that started right here in Murang’a.”

Customer, Kahawa Wendani · February 2026
★★★★★

“The Kahawa Wendani branch is very convenient for late-night shopping since it’s open long hours. Staff are friendly and it’s rarely as crowded as some of the bigger supermarkets nearby.”

Former Employee, Meru · December 2025
★★★★☆

“It was devastating watching the Makutano branch get destroyed during the July 2025 unrest — I worked there for years. Encouraged to hear reconstruction was underway quickly; hoping the branch reopens fully soon for the sake of everyone who depended on those jobs.”

D
David Mwangi
Customer, Nakuru · September 2025
★★★★☆

“Good variety and decent pricing at the Nakuru branch. It can get busy on weekends so checkout lines move a bit slowly at peak times, but overall a solid neighbourhood supermarket option.”
