Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a fully-fledged chartered private university in Kenya, originally established in 1996 by Prof. Simon N. Gicharu as Thika Institute of Technology. It received its university charter from the Government of Kenya in 2011 and is currently among the largest private universities in East Africa. The university is ISO 9001:2015 certified and is committed to a broad-based, holistic, and inclusive system of education aimed at promoting human resource development.

MKU’s main campus is located along General Kago Road in Thika Town, approximately 47 kilometres from Nairobi. The university maintains 14 campuses and centres across Kenya as of 2024, with international offices in Uganda and Somaliland. It is organised into three colleges, 12 schools, and three institutes, offering programmes through flexible modes including e-learning, evening, weekend, and Distance and Institution-Based E-Learning (DIBeL).
