📋 About Business Registration Service (BRS)

The Business Registration Service (BRS) is a semi-autonomous government agency under the State Law Office and Department of Justice, mandated to serve as the sole custodian of records for all companies and business entities registered in Kenya. BRS’s head office is located on the 17th Floor of UpperHill Chambers, 2nd Ngong Avenue, Nairobi. The agency’s mission is to provide quality business support services that are responsive to customers throughout their entire business life cycle.

BRS oversees the operations of four key registries — the Companies Registry, the Movable Property Security Rights Registry (also known as the Collateral Registry), the Insolvency Registry (Office of the Official Receiver), and the Hire Purchase Registry. The Companies Registry administers the Companies Act 2015, the Registration of Business Names Act (Cap 499), and the Limited Liability Partnerships Act. BRS has streamlined its processes by merging name reservation and business registration into a single online step, where applicants can submit up to three preferred business names alongside their full registration application through the eCitizen platform.

★★★★★

“Registered my LLC entirely online through eCitizen in about 3 days. The process of submitting three name choices at once and going straight into registration saved me a lot of back-and-forth compared to a few years ago.”

★★★★☆

“Registered my business name for my salon without needing an agent. The eCitizen system is fairly intuitive once you know what documents to prepare. Support via the call centre could be a bit faster to respond though.”

★★★☆☆

“As someone who files annual returns for clients regularly, the system works well most days but occasionally has downtime during high-traffic periods. When it works it’s efficient — just wish uptime was more consistent.”

★★★★★

“I registered a company in Kenya while living abroad entirely online, without needing to travel. Being able to do this remotely as a diaspora Kenyan investing back home meant a great deal to me. Well done to BRS on the digital transformation.”
