📋 About Mbagathi County Referral Hospital
Mbagathi Hospital’s history dates back to 1956, when it was commissioned by Sir Fredrick Crawford as South Hill Hospital for Infectious Diseases (also known as the Infectious Diseases Hospital, IDH), serving as an isolation facility for the then King George VI Hospital, today’s Kenyatta National Hospital. The hospital treated diseases such as Tuberculosis, Measles, Cholera, Leprosy, Meningitis, and diarrhoeal epidemics. It wasn’t until 1995 that the hospital gained autonomy from KNH to become a fully-fledged district hospital serving Nairobi City, and is today operated by the Nairobi City County Government as a Level 5 County Referral Hospital.
The hospital is situated at Kenyatta Golf Course Location, Kibra Sub-County, Woodley/Golf Course Ward, adjacent to the Kibra informal settlement, and serves a facility catchment population of more than one million people. Under Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration, Mbagathi underwent major renovations in 2023–2024, established a NICU with four beds and 48 incubators, launched a ground-breaking modern Diabetes Care Unit in partnership with Novo Nordisk, and was named Best Level 5 (Public) Hospital in Nairobi County in 2024, with Dr. Eric Kanjama honoured for his exemplary contribution. The hospital is also an Approved Internship Training Centre under the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and has an MOU with Great Lakes University of Kisumu for student placements.

⭐ Reviews & Ratings
Mbagathi is increasingly praised following its recent renovations and 2024 recognition as Nairobi County’s best public hospital, particularly for its new NICU, renal unit, and improved maternity services serving the Kibra community and beyond.
“My baby was born prematurely and admitted to the new NICU — the care she received there was excellent and the incubators are modern. Grateful this level of care is available to us here in Kibra without needing to go to a private hospital.”
“I do dialysis twice a week at Mbagathi’s renal unit and the medical team is attentive and professional. Having an affordable, accessible option for chronic kidney disease care close to home has been life-changing for me.”
“Waiting times in general outpatient can be long, which is common at busy public hospitals serving such a large catchment population. That said, the medical care itself once I was seen was thorough and the staff were respectful.”
“Doing my internship at Mbagathi has given me real exposure to a high-volume public hospital setting. The recent renovations have noticeably improved the working environment for both staff and patients since the upgrades in 2023-2024.”
