MYDAWA is Kenya’s first fully registered and regulated e‑pharmacy, licensed by the Pharmacy & Poisons Board Kenya. The company was founded in 2017 by Neil O’Leary through Irish private equity firm ION Equity, with a clear mission: to simplify Kenya’s fragmented pharmaceutical supply chain and tackle the widespread problem of counterfeit drugs head‑on.
What started as a pure e‑commerce business has since evolved into a hybrid “bricks‑and‑clicks” healthcare platform. MYDAWA now integrates physical pharmacies, in‑person consultations, and laboratory testing into its digital model, making it a true all‑in‑one health destination. The platform gives users direct access to qualified medical professionals, high‑quality medicines, and a wide range of wellness products through its website and mobile app.
In 2023, MYDAWA acquired Guardian Health, a Ugandan pharmacy chain with more than 10 outlets, marking a major step in its regional expansion. Today, the company operates over 21 physical branches across Kenya and Uganda, with ambitious plans to open 10 new stores in Kenya and 30 in Uganda, aiming to serve more than 8 million patients annually by 2032.
MYDAWA has raised over $48 million in funding from a strong roster of investors including ION Equity, Alta Semper Capital, AAIC Investment, Creadev, and Denmark’s Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU). In 2026, the company received a $1.2 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand access to HIV prevention services through its telehealth platform.
