📋 About Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital

Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital sits in Othaya, Nyeri County, and has grown into one of the key Level 6 facilities serving Central Kenya and the wider Mount Kenya region. It was officially opened by the Ministry of Health on 4 August 2019 and later became an annex of Kenyatta National Hospital before being elevated to an independent national referral hospital.

The hospital carries a 350-bed capacity and handles complex cases that would otherwise travel all the way to Nairobi. It offers specialised services in surgery, internal medicine, maternity, paediatrics, oncology, cardiology, renal care, orthopaedics and more. Alongside clinical work, it supports medical training and research, and maintains a 24-hour Accident & Emergency department ready for critical referrals.

Staff and management work under the motto “Your Health, Our Commitment.” The facility continues to expand its specialised clinics and diagnostic capacity so that patients from Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Laikipia and neighbouring counties can receive advanced care closer to home.
