📋 About Equity Afya
Equity Afya (also commonly referred to as Equity Afia) is a sustainable, integrated healthcare model that uses franchising principles to deliver standardised, high-quality and affordable outpatient care. The initiative was launched under the Equity Group Foundation’s health pillar with the clear goal of making primary healthcare accessible to ordinary Kenyans, especially those in underserved urban and rural communities.
Unlike traditional hospital chains, Equity Afya operates through a network of medical entrepreneurs — many of them doctors, clinical officers and other health professionals who are alumni of the Equity Leaders Program. These franchisees receive training, operational support, standardised protocols and continuous monitoring so that every centre maintains consistent quality and pricing. This approach has enabled rapid, scalable growth while keeping consultation fees deliberately low.
As of 2026 the network comprises more than 140 medical centres (figures reported between 146 and 154 depending on the exact count of new openings) covering all 47 counties in Kenya, plus a small number of facilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cumulative patient visits have exceeded 4.2 million. The organisation continues to expand, with a stated long-term ambition of reaching 1,000 outpatient centres across East and Central Africa by 2030.
In June 2026 Equity Afya marked a significant milestone by opening its first standalone community pharmacy at Britam Towers in Upper Hill, Nairobi. This move extends the model beyond clinic-based care into retail pharmacy, with the explicit target of reducing the cost of medicines by 50–80 percent through vertical integration and efficient supply chains. The pharmacy also offers free blood-pressure and blood-sugar screening plus wellness and nutrition advice, creating a seamless link back into the clinic network when further care is required.
The centres are staffed by multidisciplinary teams that include medical doctors, clinical officers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmaceutical technologists, laboratory technologists, dentists, oral health officers, sonographers, optometrists and selected specialists. Facilities are equipped for curative and preventive services, and the model emphasises both treatment and health promotion.
